The New York State Department of Veterans’ Services will hold a virtual program titled “The Weight & The Witness: Honoring Black Veterans Through Story, Poetry, and Living Memory” on Friday, February 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will feature film, spoken word, artistic presentations, and discussions that highlight the experiences and contributions of Black service members across generations. Participation in the event is free.
Dr. Lessie Branch, Special Assistant for Community Engagement at the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services, will moderate the program. The event aims to provide a platform for reflection and recognition of the legacy and resilience of Black veterans.
**Why this matters**
This event offers an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the unique experiences of Black veterans, whose stories have often been underrepresented. By sharing these narratives through various artistic and dialogic forms, the program fosters greater understanding and appreciation of their service and sacrifices.
